    Actor Bio: Actress. Born Marlee Beth Matlin on August 24, 1965 in Morton Grove, Illinois. She lost the majority of her hearing when she was an infant and performed in a children's theater group for the deaf as a child. She made her debut on the big screen in Children of a Lesser God, earning an Academy Award® for Best Actress. At age 20 in 1986, she was the youngest ever to win in that category.Matlin has since appeared frequently on television in such programs as Reasonable Doubts, Picket Fences, The West Wing and Seinfeld. In 2004, she starred in the controversial film What the Bleep Do We Know!? Matlin supports several charities, including the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the Starlight Children's Foundation.Matlin married Kevin Grandalski in 1993; they have four children. Her first novel, Deaf Child Crossing, was published in 2002.
