Hi, Everybody! I'm from Bulgaria and our TV has just recently started showing series of the "L Word". We are at season three; and though I've seen Max just once and he is still Moira, I'm already very excited and in love with the character, for I am transsexual too (female to male, 39 years old), and I'm trans for more than 20 years. Well, I liked the thread "Misunderstanding Max", started by phenomenology, and I'll add here something to the point.
People are wondering why Max've started preferring men, can't understand it and find it confusing but I think it's very convincing and, I would say, advanved, way of portraying Max. See, I myself have never ever been attracted to a man, never been with one, gay or straight, it has been only women in my life (though I know there is wide variaty of Ftm cases). But the fact is, and many people don't understnand me here and find it strange - I ususally have a crash on male-looking women!!!, butch ones, and if they've decided to be trans I wouldn't mind. I've had several very manly girlfriends, and our relationship, as weird as it sounds, looks from aside as a relationship between two guys. Actually I was never really happy when I had femme girlfriends. So, it's not surprising that I find Max very attractive (huggable, as was said here), the way I liked Hillary Swank's Brandon Teena from "Boys don't cry" too, and k.d.lang also is a very attractive person for me. I'm into Ivan Eicock and I'm sorry he disappeared from the series. So, I think the stereotype "a butch/trans woman has to fall in love only with very feminine women" is a just a myth. I'll end up here with invitein you to my website, as I'm a painter, and have a look at my paintings, they are portraits and many of them depict trans people. www.georgealexandrov.dir.bg

I've never really even liked max to begin with
I just thought his character didn't really fit in with the show. And he gets mad to easily and seems to not really be sure of what he wants and that someday is going to cause him issues in the long run. And truthfully I don't think he is even sure of himself cause he became a man to date woman and all I've really seen him attractive easily is the men. I know he has had few girlfriends but he seems in all to be happier with guys... So I don't really know about him

Max i think you need to move away shave your face and have that baby. You made your bed now you have to live with it. move, have the baby come back and start a new .i know tina wants a baby but maybe not with beete. The adoption would make her happy and youcould still see the child. i just dont feel like unless you change your thinking and your selfishness that you can handle a child in your life at this time. Good luck and i hope you have a healthy baby.

Remember how in the 1930s, white actors used to paint their faces black, with big white lips and it was called blackface? Remember how it "played a significant role in cementing and proliferating racist images, attitudes and perceptions worldwide" (thats wikipedia, not me).
Well, I thought we were past all that but it looks like showtime has created "trannyface" - in their equally inaccurate and insulting portrayal of Max on the L-word. While I'm happy that transpeople are beginning to be portrayed on television, we have a long way to go. There are so many things wrong with the portrayal of this character, not the least of which is the fact that they could have easily chosen an actual transexual actor (yes they exist, and yes many of them are attractive). One of the most bizarre inaccuracies is the facial hair makeup that they seemed to deem necessary on Max. Individual maturity varies from person to person, but the growth of facial hair is an incredibly slow process that mirrors the growth of hair on cisgendered males between the ages of 13-25. While a full beard may happen relatively quickly (and by quickly I mean in the first three years of HRT) for some, it always follows a significant and much earlier drop in voice, one that is clearly not present in Max. If you're interested you can take a look at the following web sites for actual photos and writings of transmen by transmen in various stages of transition. http://xxboys.20six.fr/ http://community.livejournal.com/ftmundressed/ http://community.livejournal.com/ftm/ http://community.livejournal.com/_ftm_/ http://community.livejournal.com/genderotica/

I agree with phenomenology completely, and it really annoys me to see so many people so 'confused' about Max's sexuality. Max didn't 'become a man' to be with women or men; he 'became a man' because he feels like a man and identifies as a male. His gender identity is completely unrelated to his sexuality. I know biological females who identify as gay men and biological males who identify as lesbians. I don't understand what is so difficult to comprehend about a biological female who identifies as a man and is attracted to both men and women. Have any of you heard of being bisexual? It's not a very difficult concept, being attracted to both sexes. There is no difference between Max and a bisexual man other than that he was born a female, which is completely irrelevant. I hope that all of you 'confused' folk will someday open your mind and stop trying to fit people into neat little boxes.

is Max trying to become a man to be with men or is Max trying to become a man to be with women? its kind of confusing since he's been with a couple of girls, and that part i understand, but then she goes and has sex with a gay man...does that make sense? are there more people like this in the real owrld. cause if so i've never met them...

I was really surprised to see all the posts on here about Max being weird or not realistic or having a confusing sexuality. Max is transgender which relates to his identity - in other words he sees himself as a man not a woman. His sexuality on the other hand is clearly fluid - maybe if you must put it in a box he is bisexual. But do we really need to box up sexuality? I think he is totally realistic - the most believable and authentic of all the L word characters as he is clearly queer. The other characters don't remotely resemble any lesbians I have met. As to switching from women to men, it is so common for FTM transgender people to start their journey as lesbians dating women and then date men when they become men. It's not so weird - a masculine woman probably first feels more at home in the lesbian community as having more in common with lesbians than with straight women, and would feel more comfortable dating women as this would allow her more flexibility in her gender role and sexuality. She would probably not date men at that point because in a heterosexual relationship with a straight man he would be relating to her totally as a woman (when she feels she is a man) and that would probably feel totally weird and wrong. However, after transition, being in a gay relationship with a man who is relating to the FTM as a man is completely different.
I hope this makes sense because I really feel he has been misunderstood.

I am so glad when the addition of the character "Max" came into play. I think the representation and understanding of Transgenders is long overdue and this is an amazing opportunity to raise awareness and compassion. I admire Daniela for her courageousness in taking on this character and the progress that has come thus far. I am guessing that this will provide the opportunity to make life altering impacts on more peoples lives than could ever be imagined. Thanks for taking stand. Much love!
