20. RE: The "table cloth" incident...Bette and Jodi
Jan 18 2008, 2:37 PM EST
I don't doubt that Marlee is a good actress, and the fact that she has an Ocsar sort of proves that.I think she is an asset to The L Word, but just not as Bette's partner. I just don't see the chemistry between the two of them, and I think it comes from Jennifer and Marlee knowing each other since they were teenagers. You can see their familarity, which is good, but I also think you can see their akwardness with each other during intimate scenes. There's just a subtle uncomfortable air about Bette and Jodi as a couple on screen. Bibou57, I agree that Marlee didn't write the scene with the table cloth. This thread was not meant as personal attack against Marlee Matlin by a long shot. I like Marlee as an actress and as a person, but I dislike the character of Jodi, something that has nothing to do with the way Marlee portrays her, but the way that Jodi has been written. Of course the table cloth scene was meant to bring about a reaction of Bette and Tina fans, but I genuinely believe that those types of scenes are going to serve the pupose of making Bette and Tina fans slowly dislike Jodi, and then lead to the splitting up of Bette and Jodi. I think it's only a matter of time this season until Bette and Tina are finally reunited. Em xx 2 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Well Bette is controling sometimes( maybe controling its the right word) and that's why we love her. When Bette sets her sight on something she goes all out. But Jodi should have just accepted the gusture then change the a tablecloth when Bette was gone. And Bette should have taken in consideration that they have two different styles and maybe she should have had waited until she got back and help decorate her apt while she was there. It wasnt the serious! IT'S JUST A TABLECLOTH ! LOL

"Did anyone else have an issue with Jodi in this scene?I totally agree with the character of Jodi. She is open about her likes and dislikes, and that isn't always a good thing. Now, why would she immediately tell Bette she didn't like kids. Bette tells Jodi she has a daughter, and Jodi's response is that she doesn't like kids. Then, the morning after they slept together, she tells Bette she plays the field. The tablecloth incident was uncalled for, as well. Jodi's last phrase in the last scene of Season 4 was "You better not break my heart". What heart ?!?!?!? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"hi I'm new here. I had a few problems with the tablecloth scene. Why just the tablecloth? Where was dinner? Or is that how they all stay so skinny--just the tablecloths and no food? I think if there was a fabulous meal on the table Jodi would not have had a problem with the surprise. I love Bette and really don't care much for Jodi but I see her point. You have a good point. There was no dinner setting, by changing the look of her table, Bette was in essence redecorating Jodi's dining area. Redecorate an artist's space ! I would not like a new conquest of mine to come into my bedroom and change the bedspread because she thought the one I already have is plain. Bette didn't have dinner waiting, she let Jodi know that her sense of style was not to Bette's pleasure. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"it just seems jodi is trying way too hard and bette won't break"I think you mean to say that Bette is trying way too hard, and Jodi won't break. It's difficult to understand what Jodi is feeling, she seems to be heartless. Do you find this valuable? |

Everyone is saying how harsh Jodi is being. But I dont think so. She is being true to herself. Thats what alot of people dont do and then they wind up being in miss matched relationships. Communicating your likes and dislikes right off the bat is what people should do and if you mesh, grand.I know Bette was trying in her way of trying to be nice, maybe a btter choice instead of redecorating her space would have been to have a take out dinner ready for them or some candles and chocolate with champane ready or something like that. Redecrating anything is something a girl shouldn't do unless your living together I dont think Bette and Jodi mesh to well. Jodi is going to have to conform to a lifstyle that is not what is her essence. Why should she do that? She could find a better match. The same for Bette. It's not a bad thing for either one of them. It's just what is and something they have to go thru and lear and grow from. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jodi is the one who is so controlling. She couldn't appreciate a nice gesture. I guess that's beyond her because she has never even had a table cloth. I don't care that she and Bette both have an interest in art. Bette is not like Jodi, and I don't think she really likes Jodi's funky place. She won't go barefoot there. They are a real mishmash.

The blindfold scene was like..kill me until its over. I actually hate their intimate scenes. I just get a kick out of seeing Bette..so that's what I focused on. I point out the lack of intimacy and connection that Bette and Jodi dont have when they are together. The table cloth thing was so sweet, even if that' was not really Jodi's thing right.. but when she looked at Bette's face and saw how genuinely excited she was to show her the table...there would be no way she could have said something as insensitive as .."This is my space"..if not then..I would have really felt like crap when Bette just sat on the table and said.."I dont know what to do." I would have realized then that she was not trying to be controlling. I dunno, maybe I just have a soft spot for Bette and I could tell she was distraught. Do you find this valuable? |

If that was me doing that for Jodi, and she acted like that, there would be no blindfolded sex scene. My ass would have been outta there. "This is my space." Gimmie a break. That was the beginning of the end. Actually the whole "I don't like kids" should have been the beginning of the end. Sidenote: Why'd it take her all day to set up a table anyway? Did I miss somethin?

Thats the whole point rae80. From the time she said I dont like kids should have been the big red flag and Better should have looked for a better fit, if she wanted a harmonizing and happy relationship.

Listen, I'm a bette and tina fan completely,no way,no how it's gonna work out with jodi! Like u, I thought she did not enjoy what bette had set up for her but we all knw bette is a control freak for real but that had nothing to do with that night. I agree with u totally. It was the thought that mattered to her lover, but like I said there is nothing about them i like. Bette and tina are hot and belong togethet. If u go back to when they were a couple,it was on and the sparks were hot! Come on,that kiss blew me away. josie-Michigan

Come on,let's be for real now. That stuff with the table cloth just goes to show u there is no chemistry with bette and jodi and jodi did'nt even appreciate what bette did for her. Like I said before we all knw bette is a control freak but no-one can handle her but tina. Lets go to the season 5 kiss episode,it was on and they both were enyoying it. Just look at the clip again and it's got nothing to do with jodi being deatf, bette wants the relationship back and jodi can be a little bit much. Like when she told bette 'if your lucki' sorry, don't think so. Bette is bored and wants tina back bad!!!! let me knw what u think? josie...Mi

I feal you baby, jodi and bette just don't do it for me,and your right bette was being sexy and romantic and she got nothing out of it because she can be a little stuck-up bitch too,but bette and tina are all that's all and u knw it. It's hot and that kiss was the bomb now the love triangle is gonna be a trip to watch. I just hope we don't have to wait until the end of the season until bette and tina are together. They got the chemistry and I must admit there is something about tina that turns me on and I'm straight!!!! josie-MI

I read it the same way you did too. Jodi jus blew it out of proportion ya know. I don't think Bette and Jodi fit either. I am a big fan of Tibette, but even when Tina did the whole thing with Angelica and Bette disappeared with her. I still thought they should work it out or least hoped they would eventually. And then i really started not to care for Tina then. but now all is good.

I agree with so many things. I'll admit also that I'm not a huge fan of Marlee Matlin, or of "Jodi", and I thought it was SO sweet that she went out and bought her the table cloth and helped fix up the loft for her return. Now if that means that she is controlling...then Jodi needs a huge slap in the face back to reality. Its little things like that that can make a difference in any relationship, and should make someone feel happy, cherished, and loved. At the moment, I was just as frustrated as Bette, she felt rejected and hurt to be called "controlling" for just buying the woman she cares for (we all know she doesn't really love her) a gift.

Jodie see everything in a different way......... the things that bette does for her........ and the comments she makes at bette...... is really hurting words and you can tell it hurts bettes feelings.... they might communicate really good with each other.......... but bette is having a hard time with jodie because, jodie thinks that bette is trying to control her all the time... but that is bette.... the powerful actress she is and playing this part.
