Discussion: Shane betrays Jenny

"I'm not making excuses for Shane. I'm just telling you what happens. The thing is, Phyllis totally blind-sides Shane and really hurts her. We don't see Bette or Alice talking to Phyllis and saying these things, but the way Phyllis speaks when she's talking to Shane, the things she says sound like direct quotes. She's telling Shane that the people she's loved and supported and cared about all these years think she's bad news and considering the fact that Shane has looked at Bette and Tina and Alice as her only family, hearing that from Phyllis is very painful, for her. And yes, while what Phyllis says IS true, that doesn't change the fact that Bette, Tina and Alice have ALL done bad things and made horrible mistakes and Shane has backed up each and every one of them and supported them and helped them to deal with the repercussions of their bad choices. Bette, Tina and Alice have *never* done anything like that for Shane in all the time they've known her. They just criticize and underestimate and disrespect her, no matter how hard she tries to make them happy and help them.

I'm not trying to make excuses or justify what Shane does. Because it's not right, but that being said, I can understand *why* Shane does what she does in the finale. She's crushed. She's completely devastated and totally disillusioned with her friends as well as any hope she might have had to have something meaningful with Molly. Nobody ever has any faith in Shane and that's largely why she's still not making as much progress as she could be. If the people around you only ever expect the worst from you and/or no improvement at all, then what kind of affect does that have on your own confidence that you'll be able to be more than you are?
