Jenny Schecter Betrayed
Mar 10 2008, 5:23 PM EDT One of the things that I loved about The L Word was the fact that Jenny Schecter was someone who looked life in the face, learned from her mistakes and moved on. In the first two seasons she was a very sincere person who wore her faults like badges of honor and didn't judge others for theirs. Although she had certain qualities that rubbed others the wrong way, like her (at times) confrontational way of dealing with others, Jenny was also sweet and comforted characters who most of the others shunned (i.e. Bette, the "harsh" looking woman from the gay pride parade in season 2 and Moira/Max). However, it seems that Jenny has lost her ambiguity. More importantly, the writers appear to have fallen for the easy trap of turning her character into a villain who (unlike Helena in season 2) takes absolutely no responsibility for her actions. This, in my opinion, shatters all of the character development that the first and second season established; turning an interesting multi-faceted character into an immature socialite who is as in love with her illusions confidence as she is with couture fashion. 3 out of 4 found this valuable. Mar 10 2008, 5:54 PM EDT I do agree with you! Jenny was a girl who tried to discover the new Lesbian World in LA! In season 4 Jenny changes a lot, she was so selfish and not loyal to her friends, I read an spoiler that said that ADELE make Jenny come back from her lost World and I think is good, we need Jenny like a good girl, who can have a beutiful girlfriend and a normal life, and her friends by her side! We need fun and love for her! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Mar 26 2008, 12:32 PM EDT I must say that I do agree with alot of your comments however, i find the character of Jenny so interesting, in season 5 and her humour compensates for alot of her superficial flaws, and If you read Jennys prolog and back ground history, you'll know that she has always had a point of drama/ betrayal/ pain to deal with, underlying or not. Her coping mechanisms have altered and developed with her over the seasons, and i think this new attitude that she addresses things with works for her and is entertaining at the same time during season 5. Her character has developed and evolved, and its not until the end of the season where by you can understand why all these barriers have been put into place, and you cant help but feel sorry for her once again, because behind all the bull***t shes still vulnerable. RE: Jenny Schecter Betrayed
Mar 26 2008, 4:11 PM EDT Hey, thanks for the response : ) Just to make everything clear, I'm not someone who only likes a character for their more "admirable" traits. Jenny's character reminded me of a lot of a moody cat; kind of a rude creature with a touch of arrogance and dignity, however surprisingly sweet when the mood struck her. Jenny's character, like a few other characters in season 5 (esp. shane), seem to do things that 1. their characters would Never do and 2. seem to completely erase their character development. Jenny, like I said in my first "thread" (I think that's the right thing to call it), was someone who learned from her mistakes and helped others who made similar ones (like Bette). However, when she started becoming a shallow socialite, it wasn't really confronted. Eventually the writers just turned her into a complete "cunt" to quote Tina. While other characters grow and develop organically, like Max and Shane (in season 4), or regress (like Bette and Tina in this season) Jenny's character seems to have been dumped along some roadside and replaced with a somehow arrogantly vacuous "fashionista." The girl who, like Virginia Woolf, had the ability to look life in the face, gets consumed by her own illusions of invented confidence. While we're also on the subject of writing, in her story "Les Girls" she "journals" (writing non-fiction accounts where she just changes the names and calls it fiction) which is also something the character (after season 2) wouldn't do. Her unimaginative writing skills kind of spits in the face of everything she learned in season 2 (I may be carrying on a little with this last point since I'm a writer myself- I write short stories and film reviews). RE: Jenny Schecter Betrayed
Mar 26 2008, 7:38 PM EDT Hey there No i love it...its great to talk to someone that actually gives a shit, as opposed to merely making the fleeting comment "yeah but shes hot/ not" I totally get where your coming from and revising my thoughts and comments would strongly agree with you on many points, i.e. the case of her writing skills dissolving into shit ref: the "Monet" argument with Alice who rightly points out that she used what imagination, when barley being able to change their names? and "don't ever fucking compare yourself to him". However i do think alot of her characters "hack-job" is due to alot of negative feedback i.e. fans etc constantly slating her role, and although they could have gone about "re-vamping" Jenny to be more palletable with more fans/ wider audience, you can kind of see (in however much of a round about way that it is) that they where bowding more on her humour and the "villian" stereotyping that has haunted her. Do you think i am chatting shit or can`you kind of see where im coming from? Also if you dont mind me asking what publication is it that you write for? Rather hooked on movies and films and love disecting them so if you ever want a good rant let me know :0) Do you find this valuable? |

Mar 26 2008, 9:37 PM EDT Hey : ) I definitely wouldn't say that you're "chatting shit" (or "shite" if your British or Irish). Being a lonely Jenny fan for the first 3 seasons, I know very well how most fans feel about her, and it totally does look like the writers let the fans decide Jenny's growth rather than just let the character develop. To be honest, I didn't think that this season was very imaginative. You had Jenny written as a weak villain (unlike Helena who totally owned her "villain" role in season 2), Shane just threw away a whole season of character development to have sex with some girl in Paige's son's bedroom, a movie is being made about (GUESS WHAT) past L Word episodes, and SURPRISE SURPRISE Bette and Tina (in a move that completely undoes their each of their character development) get back together. Why didn't they just go for all-out corny and dress the cast up in matching one-piece outfits like The Brady Bunch and have them sing a 70's pop hit? I'm not sure how to send messages on here, but if you send me one I'll reply with the publication I write for. It's a part-time gig and I only write a few a month, but I love to write them. Apr 6 2008, 2:34 AM EDT I'm not changing my perception of Jenny. For a long time,I thought that she was a bitch because from the first season, that how she acted like,a bitch. However, reading her back story on this page does give me more insight into her character. It still excuse it,but it does explain a lot of it.This season has given me a different feeling about her other than "I hope that she gets hit by a mad truck".For the first time,I'm starting to feel some compassion for her.The person who completed this page for the actress who plays her and watching episode 512 of Season 5 has made me see her human side, her vulnerable side.Don't get wrong,I still don't think that she'll be ms. goody goody, but I do realize that there are so many layers underneath this tough girl image that she's potraying. RE: Jenny Schecter Betrayed
Jun 21 2008, 12:40 PM EDT Hey, I'm sorry it took me SOOOOOOO long to get back to you. It's funny because we seem to have the opposite perception of Jenny. From the first 2 seasons (which I feel her story really carried each of them) I saw Jenny as a troubled girl who tried to look for truths about herself through lies. While this seems to be counter productive, I think that her quest for self-knowledge and her inability to deal with what she would find led to great writing. In season five she just comes off as this "for all purposes" bitch. There's no self-discovery in her character, but rather more of a saturation of superficiality and a need to constantly degrade and betray others. I think that this not only does a disservice to the character but also to the show in general. Jenny's character was someone who kept the plot going even when things were stagnant with her constant inner turmoil. In the 5th season she seems to just surrender to the turmoil. This, in my opinion, is like producing a remake of Kill Bill where Uma Therman decides to go to counseling instead of take out the people who did her wrong. Having a character simply not deal with a conflict that's been well established just DOESN'T make for good writing. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 10 2008, 2:27 PM EDT Ok, First... Hi, I'm Kinda New, So... Well, I Actually Desagree. Ok, Season Four Showed Us A Bitchy Jenny, She Presented As A Real Bitch... But Not The Whole Time! She Was A Bitch When She Needed To be One. Someone Talk About Stacy Merkin, Right? And Say jenny Was Inmadure... MAybe. But, In The Same Chapter She Looked For Merkin And Yelled At Her Secretary, Shay Got Lost. And Jenny Inmediatel y Offers Her Help To Shane, She Inmediately Changes Her Attitude And Start Looking For Shay With Max. NEVER, EVER SAY JENNY ISN'T LOYAL! I Mean, She Even Leave Carmen To Prottect Shane!!! Since First Chapter Jenny Was Presented Sweet, But As The Serie Advance We Were Able To see she was also really, really vulnerable. Every new season we discovered a new horrible situation From her Past. Every Season She gets Heartbroken, Every season she's betrayed. And In Every Season Final... She Ends Alone! I Can Actually Understand Why She Acts Kinda Bitchy All Over Season 4. Can You See She's Only Prottecting Herself? She's Been real Hurt, a Know?!!! I'm Still Saying She's Not A Bitch. At List Not Without A Cause, And Never With her Real Friends... Plus, Season 4 is Not the End Of L Word! Ya Shoul Continue Watching It And In season 5 You'll Undestand Jenny, And Everything Makes Total Sense! She Fall Inluv Again, She's Sweet, And Childich, And Her Eyes Spark... And OMG She' s perfect. And Fucking Shane Sleeps With Jenny's Girl!!! I There It Ges Again, betrayed One More Time!!! And By her BFF!!!! She has NEVER failed Shane!!! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
