Alice: Proud Winner of the 2008 Hypocrite Award
Mar 10 2008, 5:39 PM EDT | Post edited: Mar 10 2008, 5:39 PM EDT
I'd like to take this opportunity to look at some of the ways the character "Alice" is hypocritical (it's better if you read it from bottom to top):

1. Shunned Tina for her attraction to men after being made fun of/belittled for her own bisexuality in season 1.

2. Outed Niki in order to advance her own career on "The Look."

3. Outed a basketball player for his homophobic comments while protecting her girlfriend's sexual identity from being publicly known.

I don't think she deserve that! Everybody makes mistakes, nobody's perfect.
I think Alice is charming, she is a good girl, anyway almost all of the girls have some crazy ideas, and Alice is one of them, its her personality!

Lay off Alice please. I love her. Alice is just the typical friend who doesn't know when to shut up, even when she is talking around herself. She just slips up and says things that contradict what she does. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I think that those situations in number one were more or less in good fun between friends. It isn't like they stopped being friends..more of teasing each other. In situation number 2, I thought it was funny! And she never gave a name. Could have been anyone;) As far as situation 3 goes...I felt she should have done that. Especially since he went on TV and said such nasty hurtful things about gay people. I would have done the same for sure! And she technically did not "protect" Tasha in court. She changed the subject and diverted it back to the lawyer. But she did not say she never slept with her or whatnot. People should just stop being shady...lol Or atleast don't be around Alice...:)

Hey, before I respond I'd just like to say how glad I am that you guys responded in the first place. I don't write these too often.

As far as no. 1 goes, Alice WAS being shady with Tina; even Papi confronted her with it in season 4 where she said something about gay people being discriminated against because of who they sleep with and that she was doing the same thing to Tina.

For no. 2, she technically did draw attention to the affair which is the last thing that Niki would need since it could destroy her career.

In regard to 3. I'd like to mention Dana. While Dana didn't say anti-gay things, she was still "forced" by her agent to appear to be heterosexual. When Alice outed the athlete, she wasn't aware of why that guy actually said what he said. His agent could've been pressuring him to say it using some kind of career-related leverage. What IS known however would be two things: 1. By outing him, she didn't forever change the world of sports and 2. She completely humiliated him on television.

I think that Alice's "showing gay pride by outing people" is kind of dangerous since, when done in real-life, it can discourage many who are discovering their budding sexuality from coming out of the closet (to whatever extent they feel comfortable with) and getting the appropriate resources (counseling, STD testing, and other services provided by gay outreach programs) that they may need.

We could go back and forth about this all day...lol I know what you mean...but I will still disagree. Like I said...the thing with Tina was not horribly bad and I really feel it was more of a teasing between friends. Alice chose Nikki b/c why not? She was starring in a LESBIAN movie...it was bound to come out. And as far as Dana (Whom I loved) and the basketball player...you can DO WHAT YOU WANT. If an agent or a boss or whatever tells you you have to do something that you don't feel comfortable with...then you don't do it. They chose to say they were heterosexual to keep their careers. Everything comes with a price it seems. Alice probably wouldn't have said anything about that man had he not been bashing gay people. No one likes to have their secrets told...so don't do your secrets in front of those you don't know if you don't want others to know. I agree that outing people could be very dangerous. My cousin came out of the closet in 8th grade and because of the ridicule, he dropped out of school in the 9th grade and has yet to finish. He received death threats and everything. So I understand what you mean. But in those two situations...they were adults. They could have made different choices.

Thanks for your reply lilfidget (fun name!). I happen to be a gay male who usually has no one to talk to about "The L Word" so I'm Really enjoying this : )

I agree we can go back and forth since I can't stand the character this season (I loved her in season 3 though).

I totally understand/agree with what you're saying about people being responsible for their own actions. In Dana's case though, she was given the dignity to come out on her own while in the basketball player's case, he wasn't. Sometimes people have insanely complicated circumstances that seem very simple to others. For example, the basketball player could've been being blackmailed, or maybe his agent also represents a friend/lover of his and threatened to screw the other's sponsorship deal if he didn't say the anti-gay comment OR maybe the guy was just an a$$hole. My point is (like Tasha points out in that same episode) Alice didn't know what that guy's sittuation is and (I feel) shouldnt've exposed him like that; ESPECIALLY after taking a journalistic oath of not broadcasting the party's events on her podcast (I studied journalism in college so that happened to REALLY bother me since it's TERRIBLY unethical).

I'm very sorry to hear that about your cousin. I'm not sure where you're located but there are some programs in NY that offer educational services to GLBT youth.

Oh yes I agree! I remeber when she first outed that man...my husband and I could not believe she did that!! But at the same time understood. She was personally hurt by it. I don't think it was to advance her career. But the comment about Nikki was to advance her career. So I understand where your coming from. All situations are different!!
I am glad that you have come here to chat about the L Word:) We all love to talk about it...and a mans perspective on it is new and fun as well!! Please...message me anytime! I love talking about the girls...lol
I am not sure where my cousin reached out too. I don't talk to him much as we live far away... He is in Buffalo NY but we are 7 hours away:( I will let him know though! Thanks!

Ok, I know that Alice is a habitual flirt and a smart ass and yes what she did was wrong. You know who else I blame? The writers of this show for killing Dana off the show. Right before Alice started to get groove her on with that girl,Dana's spirit should've appeared and slapped some sense into Alice. You writers are partly to blame for Alice's
actions.Do you want to Alice to get into any further trouble? If not, then I suggest that you bring Dana back to the L Word. It's obvious that Alice needs her. Look at how Dana helped her last season.

Ok She is alittle bit hypocrital but I think she just forgets. Its easier to point out other's flaw instead of focusing on your own. She shouldn't have out nikki or hinted at her identity just to advance her career. Alice was just trying to help her gul keep her job. The basketball player made homophobic comments, tasha didn't Do you find this valuable?

Totally.

The guy who started it..started it this year in March and was commenting on things I don't remember seeing...like Niki..who's Niki...season 5?...but I was I guess alittle off topic...commenting on the wardrobe choices that call to mind Alice as being sort of a moral compass....I mean nobody questions Mrs. Cleaver...and then they turned it around and had her doing all these things while still dressing in a way that reminded me of Dana's uptight (closet-homo) mother...which I must admit when I think of it...as far as Alice being a hypocrite- when she prompted Dana to come out to her parents and it blew up and her mom was like..."I suppose you were a part of this too?" she's all like "I have a boyfriend." Okay so out Dana but not yourself...what the hell's up with that?!
