Shane and Jenny were always exceedingly close and very easily could have made it into something more, but the both of them treated their friendship like a sacred thing, where they just wouldn't go there, BECAUSE they were both terrified of fucking things up and losing each other and thought they didn't DESERVE to be happy, but did everything they could do to make each other happy by proxy (ie. Shane pushing Carmen over to Jenny and then Jenny pushing Carmen right back to Shane).

But, again, they didn't think they deserved happiness and were afraid of wrecking what they had with each other, so neither of them pursued it and they got closer and closer as a result. The relationship was safe for the both of them and their feelings for each other kept getting stronger, as we saw in season five.

I knew it would take something BIG and devastating for these two to wake up and realize what they stood to lose - namely each other - by refusing to face their feelings for each other. And that's why Ilene cooked up the fiasco with Niki: so she can wipe out their friendship so that they can rebuild as a COUPLE. They already love and respect and would do anything for each other, it's just that their mutual and individual fears have been holding them back from going after what they've really wanted.

So - yes, way. Nothing is impossible, unless you've got ulterior motives. Which you obviously do have."
