Gender identity is NOT sexuality.
Sep 14 2008, 5:06 AM EDT | Post edited: Sep 14 2008, 5:06 AM EDT
I agree with phenomenology completely, and it really annoys me to see so many people so 'confused' about Max's sexuality. Max didn't 'become a man' to be with women or men; he 'became a man' because he feels like a man and identifies as a male. His gender identity is completely unrelated to his sexuality. I know biological females who identify as gay men and biological males who identify as lesbians. I don't understand what is so difficult to comprehend about a biological female who identifies as a man and is attracted to both men and women. Have any of you heard of being bisexual? It's not a very difficult concept, being attracted to both sexes. There is no difference between Max and a bisexual man other than that he was born a female, which is completely irrelevant. I hope that all of you 'confused' folk will someday open your mind and stop trying to fit people into neat little boxes. 9  out of 9 found this valuable. Do you?

Yeah, I'm a biologically female who identifies as a gay man, and it angers me to see people getting so upset about Max's attractions. He's attracted to who he's attracted to, end of story. It also bugs me to hear people continually referring to Max as "she." The characters in the L Word are respectful enough to refer to Max as a he, so the fans of the show should take a note and do the same.

You have both made some good solid points which Im sure will be taken notice of by the people here on this site. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to change people's opinions of how they see Gay, Transgender, Bi and even Black people, as there will always be small minded and bigoted people in this World we live in. Max is awesome, but maybe that's just because I relate to him. I always get worried though when transgendered character are in the mainstream light because it always stirs up really ignorant/bigoted discussions... 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

How many guys do you meet that you know have penises? Did they show you them? But if you haven't SEEN their penis, and they haven't told you, you still consider them a 'he' right? Knowing what is in Max's pants is something you are privileged to know merely for the development of his character. Also, I'm sorry you don't know much about gender and probably haven't read and deconstructive texts about the subject or else you would know that sex is the body and gender is the mind :,c Knowledge is liberating, isn't it? Then again you'll probably just be confused again D: Jeez I feel so sorry for you. It must be hard to lack basic cognitive abilities +mourns+ Anyway, Max being a fictional character or not, his story rings true for a lot of transgendered people. Having people react this way and using the wrong pronoun is probably something very similar they'd do if they met someone actually transgender. It's actually a form of discrimination to not respect someone's gender identity.

Thank you! Well articulated, although I have a feeling that most people will continue to disrespect and discriminate against him.
