I had no idea Jennifer Beals was biracial

I couldn't help but notice that on occasion the show would remind us that Bette is biracial (other than just the fact of Kit being her sister) and I found myself feeling a bit offended. I thought they had a Caucasian woman playing a half black character (Although I would look closely at her skin and eyes and felt she didn't really look all white). I thought to myself "surely they could have found an actual bi racial black and white actress to play this part". So I went online, about 2 weeks ago, and googled "multi racial actresses" ,looking for a person who would have been more suitable to play Bette. Guess who I find on the results page... Jennifer Beals. I flet stupid yet relieved. Even though Bette has always been one of my fav characters on LWord, and I totally digg Jenn Beals in the movies I have seen her act, it gave me great relief that I did not have to be the offended black woman thinking that yet again a qualified African American woman was overlooked in Hollywood. Whew what a relief! lol.

Jennifer, I don't know if you welcome it or not but I find great pleasure in considering you a Sistah ;)

Jennifer is biracial in real life. Jennifer made the suggestion to Ilene Chaiken early on prior to shooting the LWORD. Do you find this valuable?

Hi Jennifer Beals has been around for a long time. She has played a few biracial roles that were really gret. In Flashdance I think the audience thinks she is mulatto.. in Devil In A Blue Dress with Denzel Washington, she played a biracial part. In Feast Of All Saints she played a Creole woman. Ive have ssen her in a lot of movies opposite white leading men. One thing I like about her is that she has a tendency to do alot of independent films. She has really done alot of movies in her career. If you go to IMBD you can see all of the movies she has worked on and upcoming projects. I'm really glad you were not disappointed at the website information..

Have a great day..Peace and many are blessings coming at ya!

I knew she wasn't white but I thought bi-racial meant any two races combined?

I think that is has been equated with Black/White for so long that it is just "assumed" that is what is meant when we say bi-racial. Time to rethink that I guess. :)

Thats right baby we're in the OBAMA era! You're right though it has always been equated with that but I'm Indian and Irish and I've always thought of bi-racial as any of the minority races as bi-racial. ;)

How many movies or TV shows have you seen where a person is made over to appear to be a race which they are not? It happens. I haven't seen much of Jenn before LWord to realize that this was not the case.

I agree that bi racial is a mix of any two races. After further reading, I discovered that Jenn's mom was Irish. With Jenn's mom being Irish and dad being African-American, she is in fact not White at all. Historically, the Irish were not white. They were treated as badly as Blacks (free slaves) for a long time by Whites. A little history lesson there if any interested.
